Company leader
Maria Lulo
Chief Executive Officer
Mentaya
Maria Lulo is chief executive of Mentaya, which files out-of-network insurance claims for therapists' clients so a private-pay therapist can charge her full rate while the client still gets reimbursed.
Psychology at Duke University
She grew up in the Dominican Republic and studied psychology at Duke University, in Durham, North Carolina. She had planned to become a therapist herself.
From First Hire to Chief Executive
While she was still an undergraduate, she reconnected with Christine Li, who had started Mentaya after struggling to submit her own superbills. Lulo joined as the company's first non-engineering hire, starting as a growth associate, and worked her way up to chief executive. She spends much of her time talking with private-practice therapists about how they get paid and how out-of-network benefits keep clients in care.
