Fellow Health
Will Matthews is founder of Fellow Health, which runs a clinical lab for mail-in semen analysis and sperm freezing, so a man can get a baseline fertility test without repeated clinic visits.
From Playboy to Home Financing
He was born and raised in a village between Oxford and London, England. He spent just under two years at Playboy Enterprises in Los Angeles, California, working on how the business should position itself in digital media. He then joined a friend to build a home improvement financing company, which grew from a kitchen table to about 100 people.
A Three-Month Wait for a Urologist
After moving to the United States he wanted to see a urologist, and the next available appointment was three months away. That wait led him to set up Fellow in 2018, and he went full time that September. Between 2018 and 2020 the company built its own lab, earned CLIA approval, and published research in the journal Fertility and Sterility showing that a mailed sample could be tested accurately.
Launching the Mail-In Test
Fellow launched its test in April 2020. "Semen quality is the canary in the coal mine to overall health," he said in 2021, pointing to studies that link poor semen quality to higher risk of diabetes, heart disease and cancer.
