CareMessage
Vineet Singal is co-founder and chief executive of CareMessage, a nonprofit that texts patients at safety-net clinics about appointments, medicines, and how to manage a condition.
Childhood in Four Countries
He was born in India and raised in four countries, including Saudi Arabia and New Zealand. His parents, both physicians, later settled in New York City. He studied biological sciences at Stanford, graduated with university distinction, and sat as a student representative on the university's board of trustees.
Volunteering in Galveston, Texas
While at Stanford he took a break to volunteer at St. Vincent's Free Clinic in Galveston, Texas, after Hurricane Ike. Texting those patients is what became CareMessage. After graduation he turned down a medical-school acceptance and built the organization. He had also led a Stanford team that registered more than 115,000 potential bone-marrow donors through social media, and he published research in cancer biology, ophthalmology, neurology, and epidemiology at Mount Sinai, the National Institutes of Health, and Stanford.
He is a Forbes 2012 30 Under 30 social entrepreneur, a Paul and Daisy Soros Fellow, and a Barry M. Goldwater Scholar.
