Co-founder and CEO

Socially Determined

Trenor Williams is a family physician and the co-founder and chief executive of Socially Determined, a Washington, DC, company whose software scores social risks such as food insecurity and housing instability for health plans. He earlier founded the health IT consulting firm Clinovations and sold it to the Advisory Board Company in 2014.

A Social Worker's Son

Williams is the son of a social worker. His mother noticed things providers often missed, such as whether a car sat in the driveway, whether the fridge held healthy food, and whether a family had stable housing, and he carried that view into medicine.

Family Medicine in California

Williams earned a bachelor's degree in biology at Virginia Tech and his medical degree at Marshall University, then completed a family practice residency at Kaiser Permanente in Los Angeles, California. He became medical director of family practice at Mammoth Hospital in California and served as a lieutenant commander in the US Naval Reserve.

Building Clinovations

Williams moved into consulting and founded Clinovations, a health IT consulting firm, which he ran as CEO until the Advisory Board Company bought it in 2014. The work centered on putting healthcare technology to use and redesigning clinical processes for health systems.

Measuring Social Risk

In 2017 Williams co-founded Socially Determined to bring social risk data into care decisions alongside clinical and claims data. He framed the gap this way: "The missing elements are the social determinants of health - also called social risk factors or non-traditional determinants of health." CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield rolled the company's analytics out across its enterprise in 2022, and Williams credited the plan for its approach: "CareFirst is leading the way in showing how health plans should look beyond claims and clinical data to better serve their people, and we're proud to partner with them on this pioneering journey."
