Co-founder and CEO

Ambience Healthcare

Nikhil Buduma is co-founder and chief executive of Ambience Healthcare, which drafts the note and the codes from a visit. He wrote Fundamentals of Deep Learning, an early textbook on modern neural networks, and he became chief executive in September 2025.

A Laboratory Job at 16

He grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, California, and spent time around Stanford. At 16 he managed a drug discovery laboratory at San Jose State University and worked on low-cost screening methods. By 19 he had competed twice at the International Biology Olympiad. He earned a bachelor's degree and a master of engineering in computer science at MIT. There he co-founded Lean On Me, a text hotline students use to reach a peer. He planned to become a physician-scientist but left the MD-PhD path after a mentor died from a medical error. He weighed "the net benefit to the world for another MD-PhD versus thinking about how do you solve these problems systemically," he said, and chose the system.

Running a Medical Practice First

He wrote Fundamentals of Deep Learning for O'Reilly and spent time with the early deep learning researchers who went on to found OpenAI. He then co-founded Remedy, a San Francisco primary care group, to learn what running a practice, working with doctors, and implementing an electronic record felt like. In 2020 he and Mike Ng founded Ambience Healthcare in San Francisco so the note would come from the encounter, with no typing after it. He was chief scientist. On September 22, 2025, the company said he would become chief executive and that Ng would become president and chairman.
