LeanTaaS
Mohan Giridharadas is founder and chief executive of LeanTaaS. Its iQueue software schedules scarce hospital capacity, including operating rooms, infusion chairs, and inpatient beds, so more patients can be seen without adding rooms.
From IIT Bombay to McKinsey
His father and all three of his older brothers were engineers. He earned a bachelor of technology from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, in Mumbai, India, a master of science in computer science from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and an MBA from Stanford's Graduate School of Business. He went on to be a senior partner at McKinsey, where he led lean manufacturing and lean service operations in North America and the Asia-Pacific, working from Sydney, Australia, and Singapore during his 18 years at the firm.
Building LeanTaaS
He left McKinsey at the end of 2009, having seen operational improvement projects everywhere run on Excel spreadsheets and temporary project teams, and started LeanTaaS in 2010 to replace both with stronger math delivered as software. At a Silicon Valley party, a stranger warned that without McKinsey's name no chief executive would take his meeting. "My new company had to be something that could leverage the skills that had taken me 20 years to build, while also being disruptive and distinctive in the software space," he said. iQueue is in use at more than 180 health systems, and at least one of its products is deployed at more than 1,000 hospitals and centers. With Sanjeev Agrawal he wrote Better Healthcare Through Math, a book about using operations math on operating-room and infusion schedules, and he has taught lean service operations at Stanford Continuing Studies and at the Haas School of Business.
