Ambience Healthcare

Mike Ng is co-founder, president, and chairman of Ambience Healthcare, which drafts the clinical note, suggests billing codes, and writes an after-visit summary from the exam. He came to the problem after a 2012 back fracture, met his co-founder at MIT Sloan, and started Ambience in 2020.

A Back Injury in 2012

He earned a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Sydney, choosing economics, finance, marketing, and law subjects. "I always knew I wanted to run a company one day," he said. He worked in finance until he fractured his back in 2012. The injury was first taken for a sprain and he was put on the wrong plan. "I ended up Googling to figure out what was the best care pathway, and then I realised I wasn't alone in doing this," he said, and he came away thinking clinicians spend most of the day on notes, codes, and authorizations instead of the patient. He entered Sloan in 2014 and, in his first week, met Nikhil Buduma at a Martin Trust Center event. The two became fast friends and took entrepreneurship classes together, and he earned his MBA in 2016. "MIT was an incredible training ground to evaluate what makes a great company," he said.

Remedy and Ambience

They founded Remedy Health in San Francisco, California, in 2016, a company that employed clinicians and ran its own AI tools. In 2020 they started Ambience to fine-tune general models for clinic work. It began as a scribe that records a visit on a phone or laptop inside a HIPAA-compliant system. The founders then rewrote the models so the note also fits coding rules, which differ by specialty and by contract and change every year. The suite now prepares a chart before the visit, writes the note during it, helps pick billing codes, and sends an after-visit summary, including in languages other than English.

Clinicians in more than 100 subspecialties were using it across about 40 health systems, among them UCSF Health, Memorial Hermann, St. Luke's, and John Muir, and those clinicians save two to three hours a day on documentation. He led Ambience as chief executive from its founding until September 2025, when Buduma took over as chief executive and he became president and chairman. "In my new position, I look forward to focusing on Ambience's long-term vision and strategy," he said.
