Julie Yoo, General Partner, Andreessen Horowitz (a16z Bio + Health)

Julie Yoo is a general partner on the Andreessen Horowitz Bio + Health team, investing in companies that change how patients reach care, how that care gets paid for, and how clinical work gets done, including Ambience. Before investing she co-founded Kyruus, a company built on a problem she hit as a patient: a months-long wait for a specialist in a department her friends said was running below capacity.

Studying Computer Science and Medicine

She studied computer science and pre-medicine as an undergraduate at MIT. She later earned a master's degree in genomics from the Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology program and an MBA from MIT Sloan.

Solving Supply and Demand Problems

She began in software engineering and sales engineering at Endeca Technologies, which Oracle later acquired. She was a product manager at Knome, then vice president of product at Generation Health, which CVS Health acquired. Across those jobs she built products for what she calls supply-demand mismatch problems in ecommerce, manufacturing, and molecular diagnostics.

Founding Kyruus

The idea for Kyruus came from her own life. A specialist's office gave her a wait of more than four months, "while my friends who were hospital administrators told me that they were operating at only 70% to 80% capacity in that department." She and her co-founders called it the Patient Access Paradox and in 2010 started Kyruus to match patients with providers who had room. As chief product officer for eight years, she scaled the Kyruus platform to 20 million patients and more than 225,000 providers, and RevSpring later acquired the company.

Joining Andreessen Horowitz

She joined Andreessen Horowitz on October 9, 2019, as a general partner, the firm's 17th, investing from its bio fund with Vijay Pande and Jorge Conde. Her portfolio includes AKASA, Ambience, Hippocratic AI, Sprinter Health, Thatch Health, and Turquoise Health. She is a Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum.
