Founder and CTO

Canvas Medical

Andrew Hines is founder and chief technology officer of Canvas Medical. He built the record so a clinic can change its own screens instead of waiting on the vendor.

Building Surfboards as a Teenager

As a teenager he started Apex Precision Surfboards, using design software and robots to shape boards for surfers, and he sold that company at 19. He still surfs. He earned a bachelor's degree in mathematical statistics and business administration from San Francisco State University, then a master's in management science and engineering from Stanford.

Analytics at Practice Fusion

He had started a doctorate at Stanford when he left to join Nor1, a travel-technology company, as its first analytics employee. He later worked at Practice Fusion, where he built a real-time analytics tool on top of the record. In 2015 he founded Canvas after watching his wife, Annalies, a family nurse practitioner, struggle with clinic software. They have two sons. Canvas is an electronic record a practice can extend, with interfaces a developer uses to change the chart. He led the company as chief executive until September 2024, when president Adam Farren became chief executive and he moved to chief technology officer to lead its AI work, starting with a tool called Backplane.
