Andrew Gostine, MD, is co-founder and chief executive of Artisight.
A Builder in Grand Rapids
He grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the son of a physician and entrepreneur father and a nurse mother. In fourth grade he worried that the world would run out of electricity, so his father bought him a solar panel at a marine store, and he wired it on the roof to a battery. "Nobody ever told me engineering was a thing," he said, and with two clinicians at home he assumed medicine and nursing were the only careers. He went to Boston College, which had no engineering department, and then to medical school at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.
Medicine, Consulting, and Venture Capital
A detour to business school for a dual degree introduced him to artificial intelligence, and he returned to medicine asking why hospitals used none of it. He began residency at Northwestern in Chicago, Illinois, where an internship with 22 weeks of vacation left him time to start a consulting company that validated hardware and software for health systems. That work led to a job in venture capital at Jump Capital, the investing arm of the high-frequency trading firm Jump Trading, where the goal was shaving microseconds off trades. Back in residency, he was handed a pager again and saw how far healthcare technology trailed finance.
Founding Artisight
He finished a fellowship at Stanford, and in 2015 he founded Artisight with Garrett Larance and Tim Koby. The first product was an application for operating-room efficiency, meant to cut wasted time in the room. By 2019 the company was selling an AI sensor system for operating rooms, patient rooms, and clinics, and its smart hospital platform now runs in more than 470 hospitals with close to 200 employees. He still practices medicine. "It really is solving a trillion small problems," he said of starting a company.
Home in Chicago
He lives in Chicago, where he met his wife a month after arriving for residency. They have three daughters, and by his account the K-pop Demon Hunters soundtrack has taken over his Spotify playlist.
