Paubox vs Virtru

Updated October 16, 2026

Clinics and health tech companies that send patient information by email often compare Paubox and Virtru. Paubox encrypts mail so recipients read it in an ordinary inbox, while Virtru wraps email and files in encryption that the sender can revoke or set to expire. One removes friction for patients, and the other gives the sender more control after a message leaves.

Our analysts compared Paubox and Virtru on recipient experience, file protection, deployment, add-on modules, and pricing transparency, using the HIR review of each company and both vendors' newsrooms. In the following sections, we compare them directly, describe the buyer each suits, and list what each launched this year.

Which fits which buyer

Decide whether the reader's convenience or the sender's control matters more.

Choose Paubox if

  • Patients should read secure email without logging into a portal.
  • You want posted starter prices and a mail-flow change instead of a project.
  • You want phishing training and an email API from the same vendor.

Choose Virtru if

  • You need to revoke or expire messages and shared files.
  • You protect Google Drive or SharePoint files as well as email.
  • You also serve federal or defense customers that need FedRAMP products.

How they differ in practice

Paubox encrypts outbound healthcare email so recipients read PHI in ordinary inboxes instead of a separate portal, and starter plans appear on paubox.com with volume tiers.

Virtru applies data-centric encryption to email and files inside Gmail, Outlook, Google Drive, and SharePoint, including revoke and expiration controls, with gateway and client options.

Paubox is usually a mail-flow change rather than a multi-month project. Virtru prices by protected seats and Drive or SharePoint volume, with no stable public healthcare list price.

Paubox sells inbound filtering, archiving, an API, and marketing email as add-ons. Virtru sells a mail gateway and desktop or browser plugins as separate options.

What buyers say

“Big fan of Paubox. It makes it easy to create and customize HIPAA forms without a lot of extra steps. I use Google Workspace with Paubox.” sleepwell-bewell · r/therapists · Feb 9, 2026, source

Verdict

Paubox is slightly ahead for healthcare email and is easier for patients on the receiving end. Virtru is the better fit when files and post-send control matter, or when a company also sells to government buyers.

Solo practices needing only secure forms may find both more than they need.
